Peter Was Here

December 2020

4 ¼ x 7 inches

Double pamphlet of paper, drafting vellum, tracing paper, linen thread, laser print ink. Edition of 2.

This book explores the concept of erosion, both physical and implied by comparing two atypical burial locations and the way each site serves as a memorial until it is dissolved back into the landscape. The first half of the book shows images of a gravestone from 1812 with barely legible lettering. The second section shows a forest and a natural sandstone arch where another individual’s ashes were recently scattered. Between the two sections is an image of a natural hole created by water erosion, printed on tracing paper. This divider is printed on one side and is meant to separate the two sections both physically and thematically.

This book is meant to encourage the reader to reflect or ponder monuments, memory, and erosion. Not to suggest a right or wrong approach. We are one of many lifeforms on this planet and just as susceptible to erosion as the trees slowly slipping down and eroding sandstone cliff.
